My Hyperactive One-Year-Old Can’t Fall Asleep

By admin | March 2, 2008

I’m looking for a solution for my one-year-old child.   She cannot fall asleep.  It seems like she’s always awake and extremely hyperactive.   I tried cutting down on sugar, white flour, snacks and milk.    No change.  I put several stuffed animals into her crib, which made it a little better.    Any ideas out there?       Edita

I’m a special education teacher that deals with many hyperactive kids. I don’t want to rush and say to have your kid tested and see if she may have ADHD. Is she hyperactive all day or only at night? There are some things you can try before bedtime to try to relax her. You can try to limit her activity for a couple of hours before bedtime. Also, you can try to have some classical music play in the background during her bedtime routine to try to soothe her. Lastly, and most importantly, as frustrating as the situation can get, make sure to speak gently to her, do not get aggravated and yell. This will only excite her more. Good Luck!

Thanks so much for your input. I’m going to try your suggestions as they make so much sense. Beats sitting in the psychologist’s office with no results. I’ll let you know what transpires within the next couple of weeks. Can’t wait. Thanks again. Edita
