Are Crib Bumpers Safe?

By mominthecity | May 6, 2009

I don’t know about you, but I was so excited to set up our baby’s nursery.  There were so many decisions!  My husband and I finally agreed on pink and yellow as the color theme.  I started browsing the web for ideas.  We painted the room a pastel pink and put a pale yellow border around the room.  I found a lamp that matched perfectly!  I found a beautiful rug that was pink with nice large yellow flowers…perfect!  I was having difficulty choosing a crib set.  If that wasn’t difficult enough, I started hearing about the “bumper debate.”  Are bumpers safe to use in a crib?  I got so many opinions from family and friends.  Some said it’s completely ok, while others said they would never use one.  Others informed me of something called a “breathable bumper.”  As nice as it sounded though, it wasn’t pretty.  I wanted to keep my baby safe, but at the same time have a pretty room.  I didn’t know who’s opinion to trust, so I decided it was worth a call to my pediatrician.  After all, he’s the one I trust with the well being of my baby.  He calmed me down and told me that although there are many different opinions, as long as the bumper has ties on the top and on the bottom, bumpers are completely safe.  By having ties on the top and bottom, they are completely secure around the crib and the baby can’t pull it and suffocate from it.  This made me so happy!  Now the search for crib sets with bumpers that had ties on the top and bottom that would match my color theme was ready to begin!

I didn’t expect to find it so hard to find these safe bumpers and when I finally found bumpers with ties on the top and bottom, there weren’t any that matched my color theme or they looked very cheaply made.  I was a bit frustrated, but not wanting to give up, I continued searching. I came across the site “sheetworld.com .” I thought I was in heaven!  They have bumpers with 9 ties on the top and 9 ties on the bottom which keeps the bumper securely in place.  Additionally, they have hundreds of colors and patterns to choose from!  There were so many that would match my pink and yellow color theme!  Did I mention how excited I was?! I spent some time looking through sheetworld’s many colors and patterns and finally decided on one.  Another great aspect of sheetworld.com , which I didn’t know would be beneficial, until I saw it,  is that I was able to buy each part of a crib set separately and mix and match the products to make my own creative and unique crib set.  I came up with my own combination of sheets, a bumper, crib skirt, and quilt cover that goes so well with my pink and yellow theme!  I am so thankful to sheetworld.com !
